Communications Director

 

Successful candidates will be entrepreneurial and mission-driven. They should demonstrate strong storytelling skills and media expertise. They believe in making an impact within an organization through creative storytelling, brand awareness, social media engagement and events management. They should have a commitment, passion for, and/or willingness to learn about how national security and technology communities can come together to outpace emerging security challenges.

Our ideal candidate is a fast-learner and self-starter, with the ability to translate complex issues into simple and compelling narratives for a variety of audiences.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Health and dental benefits are available. This position is remote, though applicants working in the Pacific time zone are preferred.

Key responsibilities

  • Formulating and executing communications strategies across different levels of product and organizational goals.

  • Developing media strategies and collateral materials and executing across a variety of media platforms. Building and cultivating trusted relationships across media platforms. Interact, build partnerships with and earn coverage from key national and trade press.

  • Managing and growing IST’s presence on social media.

  • Manage and develop IST’s visual identity and brand.

  • Designing visual content to support IST’s products (e.g. social graphics, infographics, one-pagers, and full reports).

  • Producing live events via Zoom and helping to organize occasional in-person convenings.

  • Managing IST’s email marketing.

  • Tracking and reporting engagement metrics.

  • Copyediting and reviewing IST publications and blogs.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience leading executive and strategic communications for nonprofits, think tanks, or advocacy brands.

  • Strong project manager with the ability to juggle multiple projects and deliver results in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

  • Excellent media relationships and networks, writing skills and utilization of best-in-class communications tools.

  • Background and interest in national security and technology issues.

  • Expertise in crafting and executing integrated public affairs or advocacy campaigns.

  • Have attention to detail, enthusiasm, creativity and professionalism, a desire to work hard in a fast-paced environment and be part of an extraordinary group of people.

  • Fluency in social media platforms, strategy, and trends; previous campaign management.

  • Experience managing online events using various platforms, including Zoom and LinkedIn Live.

  • Proficiency with Canva, PowerPoint/Google Slides, Adobe Creative Cloud apps: Illustrator; InDesign; Photoshop, WordPress and other major CMS.
