About this role 

The Senior Account Manager (SAM) will step into the shoes of an Account Director when required and will start to develop and demonstrate strategic thinking. The SAM will become increasingly responsible for growing and managing account team members, as well as playing an essential role in supporting the business and client base.

The SAM will continue to refine and enhance their healthcare communications skills, taking a sense of ownership and accountability on all accounts and driving through campaigns to successful completion. Recognising the importance of the ‘bigger picture’, the SAM will be expected to develop their leadership skills as they grow in this role

Core responsibilities

Managing projects to deliver high quality, on-strategy campaigns 

  • Oversee the day-to-day management and implementation of multiple client campaigns/teams to drive the business forward

  • Take active role in leading client meetings/calls

  • Develop, manage and delegate projects/campaigns effectively, acting as the primary client contact where appropriate, with support from the senior team

  • Assist the senior team to:

    • Develop objectives, strategies, tactical programmes

    • Evaluate results across a portfolio of client business

    • Develop and manage appropriate budgets for client campaigns/activities

    • Manage team workloads and maintain servicing levels

  • Take responsibility for the financial status of accounts and oversee client billing, ensuring profitability.

  • Inspire, coach and develop the account team, continually challenging them to deliver a strategic, comprehensive and professional service

  • Ensure work produced meets/exceeds the objectives set and is done so in a timely manner, to the highest possible standard and achieving the possible best results

  • Deliver programmes against objectives and evaluate accordingly with support from the senior team

  • Oversee the execution of media strategies, being fully competent in using traditional, digital and social media techniques, either earned or paid-for, in client assignments and discussing ROI tools.

  • Assist senior team in the preparation and delivery of presentations and new business proposals, often developing first draft proposals and slide decks

  • Ensure all written communication is of the highest quality (grammar; spell-checked)

 Player with clients

  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through regular contact; make conscious effort to understand how to work most effectively with each client

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the client’s business and industry, their competitors and business objectives

  • Provide strategic counsel to clients, based on knowledge of their business, the market and the media

  • Aim to be balanced and thoughtful in your approach and consider the wider business perspective and merits/fallbacks of different approaches prior to taking action

  • Develop the ability to influence and manage client’s expectations

  • Challenge and negotiate with clients

  • Identify opportunities for organic growth with existing clients

  • Develop knowledge of the internal environment in which clients operate – start to identify potential opportunities for organic growth and demonstrate an appreciation of the challenges they may be facing in their role relative to where Evoke can help

 Delivering high standards in communications 

  • Provide strategic, creative and tactical input to documents, including pitches, proposals and presentations

  • Give shape, coherence and direction to all written materials

  • Support and review teams’ written materials, helping and advising on key areas of development and improvement

  • Maintain, build and cultivate relationships with strategic third party professionals

  • Support team members in identifying reactive media opportunities and developing appropriate, well considered recommendations for the client

  • Contribute to the management and handling of issues/crisis responses as appropriate

  • Plan, attend and contribute to media training sessions

  • Show enthusiasm and a willingness to embrace new responsibilities/challenges.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of media and customer events activities e.g. press events, conferences, product launches, social media activity

 Building collaborative, trusted teams

  • Demonstrate ability to lead a team and client project from initiation to completion outside of standard client work/team. This could be pitches or standalone projects.

  • Begin to demonstrate maturity and ‘gravitas’ both in the office and with clients.

  • Advance profile within the wider department as an inspiring, competent, approachable, dependable and consistent SAM

  • Take responsibility for direct line management of team members

  • Provide constructive and timely feedback on work set, and offer support and guidance where necessary

  • Conduct regular appraisals and ensure performance objectives are set

  • Identify areas of development where necessary and highlight to line manager

  • Assist with recruitment where necessary

Industry knowledge

  • Utilise understanding of the NHS/international health systems and broader health environment, applying growing knowledge towards the implementation and development of client and new business programmes (UK and global)

  • Build an in depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, Evoke, and client environment

  • Keep updated on new developments within the healthcare communications industry, social media platform developments and other PR agency activity

  • Keep updated on the ABPI, GDPR codes and other international regulatory bodies that impact on client business

  • Solid understanding of European/ UK media and social media platforms within the healthcare environments.

Level of experience 

Account Manager experience or higher within a comparable industry.
