Stanford University Seeks Digital Engagement and Marketing Specialist

Stanford is creating a new school focused on climate and sustainability, the first new school at the university in more than 70 years. Faculty, students, and staff will conduct research, education, and impact-focused activities that are inspired by, or helpful to, humanity’s urgent need to create a future in which humans and nature thrive together in concert and in perpetuity.

 

The new school will comprise expanded academic departments (building on those in the existing School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, in other Stanford schools, and new departments), institutes (including the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy), the facilities of the Hopkins Marine Station, and a new sustainability accelerator, which will co-develop and translate policy and technology solutions at scale with external stakeholders. 

 

The Digital Engagement and Marketing Specialist for Stanford’s new school will assess, develop and implement a broad digital community strategy for this new organization, integrating and partnering with social media efforts across multiple units.

 

Your responsibilities will include *

Working closely with the Associate Dean for Communications in the new school, you will:

  • Benchmark best practice efforts in the field, recommend strategy, and create/implement content across social channels.

  • Maintain the school’s current four social media platforms, creating written and video material for daily postings, shaping posts to support events, and executing 5X a year targeted campaigns.

  • Coordinate and monitor channels elsewhere at Stanford and globally for maximum outreach of Stanford research and educational programs to a variety of targeted audiences including prospective students, policy makers, scientists, and the public.

  • Monitor the brand and voice of multiple digital channels associated with the new school.

  • Liaise with internal stakeholders such as program teams, service teams, IT, and other campus partners to achieve program goals, source content, and ensure coordination.

  • Manage complaints, name use, and reputational issues in digital channels. This role will be a “player/coach,” advising students, staff and faculty on use and execution of social media content.

  • Plan and execute paid social promotion in support of undergraduate outreach, faculty thought leadership in sustainability and environmental sciences, and building the Stanford Earth Matters online magazine subscription base.

  • Participate actively in editorial team decision-making around content strategy and distribution and coordinate with Stanford University’s social media team.

 

This is an on campus position, with the possibility of some remote work days. Full time remote work in NOT available for this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Required* 

Bachelor's degree and minimum 5 years of relevant experience or a combination of education

and relevant experience.

  • Knowledge of the web, technology, social platforms, current and future trends.

  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.

  • Strong strategic outlook and ability to leverage current and future trends to help an organization succeed at the broadest level, across groups, teams or units.

  • Subject matter expertise in digital community development.

  • Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with senior staff and other members of the academic community.

  • Experience with highly-functioning teams or digital agency contractors

 

In addition, our preferred skills include: 

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to drive projects forward independently, willingness to work in a fast-paced team, and knowledge of environmental science/policy.

  • Quick response to news-driven events, and proven ability to write succinctly and create simple video for the web and social media.

  • Familiarity with or willing to learn: Google Analytics, Adobe Photoshop, Canva, Buffer, Khoros, iPhone video, Final Cut Pro.

  • Extended videography and photography skills a plus.
